Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Oh, it's on the tip of my tongue!" is a phrase a lot of us use when we can't quite recall the word we want to say. My students with Speech and Language Impairments experience this feeling frequently as they struggle to use and understand classroom vocabulary, and follow basic directions.
As a Speech-Language Pathologist, I word with students who are diagnosed with a Speech and Language Impairment from the ages of 3-16.
These students attend a large, inner city school and are part of a significant English Language Learner population. The students and their families are dedicated and hardworking individuals, but frequently lack materials to aid academic growth outside of the school. Additionally, limited exposure outside of their homes often impacts their language development, including vocabulary.
My Project
The vocabulary games/activities, and listening comprehension materials will be used to assist these students from two directions. First, the listening comprehension materials will be used as stations in the Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms as a form of Response to Intervention (RtI). This type of approach is used to target students who are struggling in specific areas, and require targeted interventions in the hopes of prevented them from requiring special education resources. Since many of the students in our building struggle following directions with position words and specific vocabulary, these materials will be a great way to have targeted practice.
The games and activities specifically focused on language will be used both for students participating in RtI, and students with a Speech and Language Impairment. These activities provide a fun, engaging way to build greatly needed vocabulary skills, as well as practice strategies that can be used in all academic areas.
My students are constantly striving to succeed academically, and need additional assistance and materials in order to attain their goals.
Targeted practice for vocabulary and listening comprehension will not only aid them in succeeding in the classroom setting, but will build life skills that can be used in future careers.
