Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When students enter our room, they know that they will explore the world of mathematics through problem-solving that is relevant to their lives. And yet, the problems they will need to help solve have yet to be defined. What we do know, is that mathematics will be at the center of these solutions, as well as technology.
My students are energetic, kind, and motivated to work hard!
At a school where over 70% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunch, students often have little to no access to digital tools outside of our classroom. On top of this, the school's class sizes are typically larger than others, with an average of 35 students in each class. Unfortunately, even in the classroom, there are not enough mathematical tools for every student to use. By helping provide my students with these tools inside the classroom, I hope to provide them the opportunities necessary to find mathematical success!
My Project
Basic supplies allow students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. Without these start of the year supplies, many students will be left without needed tools like pencils and calculators. Making sure students are comfortable and taken care of are essential components in motivating them.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they have all the tools necessary to work.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional work options to use the classroom whiteboards. Many students are afraid to get an answer wrong (especially in math) so the use of erasable pens are perfect to help them build a growth mindset. Many of the supplies selected will provide students' basic needs to be met throughout the year. Lamps will have plugs, computers will have surge protectors, and some supplies for student assistants - the additional office chair with support pillow - and lots of colored pens will replace what is broken in our classroom.
I have seen how tools can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
