My students are 7th and 8th graders in a semi-rural Junior High School in a STEAM-Centered and Problem-Based Learning-Centered district. We have a variety of families ranging from very poor to middle class to wealthy. The students at EJHS are kind, caring, resilient innovators.
My students are inquisitive, energetic, passionate, problem-solvers who desire to prove they are successful.
I couldn't ask for a better group of students to teach! They are so eager to jump in and problem-solve, support others in need, and find joy in the midst of the struggle that comes to those in junior high.
As a science teacher, I am always looking for ideas to engage students, help them use 21 Century Skills, all while teaching content standards. There are a great number of ways to do so with forensic science.
My Project
The materials from this project will be used to enhance curriculum and refurbish supplies for a forensic science STEM class. Students will learn many forensic science techniques and solve several crimes during a semester-long course.
Students will solve unsolved forensic cases involving blood spatter, blood typing, DNA analysis, fingerprinting, handwriting analysis, forensic anthropology, and more.
Students will use the provided materials to test blood found at a crime scene against the blood type of a victim and suspects. Students will learn how to analyze blood spatter at a crime scene to determine how, and where a suspect and victim were located in the scene when the victim died. As well as, dusting for fingerprints on surfaces at a crime scene for comparison to known prints of the victim and suspects. In addition, the materials will be used to teach students about forensic anthropology, how to determine the age, gender and origin of bones located buried on school grounds.
In addition to learning the various techniques, students will research unsolved crimes and recreate miniature-sized crime scenes to display and inform others about crime scene analysis.
