On Our Way to College

My students need an LCD Projector to strengthened a college-going culture by viewing colleges, financial aid packages, SAT models for admission into a 4 year university.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine to be the first in your family not only to graduate from high school but also to be accepted to a 4 year college? From the inception of their freshmen year, the college conversation begins. College presentations, displays, speakers and outings offer our students paths towards pursing college.

The demographics of our school consist of 2.3% Caucasian, 44.4% African American, 50% Hispanic and 3.3% Asian.

95% qualify for free lunch and will be the first in their families to gradate from high school. Although our school is housed in an educational complex of six independently run high schools, we have consciously extended our college-going environment to welcome all of the schools in our complex. We have facilitated an annual campus-wide college fair with over 50 participating institutes of secondary education. Our school also participates in the College Summit Peer Leadership Program which is a nation-wide program that helps navigate lower-income students into college. Each summer 15 of our rising seniors attend a 4 day workshop at a college to learn about the college application process; then these peer leaders bring what they have learned back to our school and help mentor their peers. We have also been able to infuse our school-wide curriculum with the College Summit Program.

My Project

Our college-going culture will be strengthened by technology (such as an LCD Projector) so that our students can visually learn of different College Programs. Involved Parent-Teacher Workshops in financial aid, resume building, college and vocational programs, peer mediation, self-esteem programs, and employment development and networking will all be visually enhanced. To ensure that our students are adequately prepared for the PSAT and SAT examinations, our teachers will be able to visually display activities in lessons that are designed to strengthen our students’ reasoning skills. For example, for those students that have completed their math course requirements before senior year, we have created a visual Pre-Calculus class for the purpose of enhancing proficiency in advanced mathematics. Our sophomore English classes will be spent on focusing on how to write a personal statement by viewing different types of essays that will begin to prepare them for college.

By adding technology to our college-going culture, the most recent NYC Annual School Report Supplement indicates that 80.6 percent of our graduates have post-high school plans that include enrollment in 2- or 4-year colleges, compared to 54.5% of students in similar schools and 60.5% in city schools.

In addition, we have seen our graduation rate increase from 50% to over 70%, our English Regents scores have increased from 40% to 83% and our Global History Regents’ scores have also increase.
