My students need books with CDs for listening, magnetic writing boards and a pencil sharpener for writing, sight words for reading, and a camera memory card and case.
Have you ever missed something? Well, my students are missing needed audio books for listening, markers and writing boards with lines for writing, an electric pencil sharpener to help in writing, sight word puzzles for reading, and a memory card and case for their camera.
Most of my students come from homes that have very few material possessions.
They often don't have anyone who has read aloud to them on a regular basis. Many of them have very few books of their own at home. They often are very low in their reading skills, because they have had very little experience with reading, outside of this school. Since reading and writing go hand-in-hand, they are also often struggling when it comes to expressing themselves in writing. They often struggle with putting their words on paper.
They often have no puzzles, markers, or Cd's at home. They love using these tools at school. I try to make our classroom a warm, fun, exciting place to work.
Our students are still dealing with the after-effects of the massive tornado that hit their town in May 2011. Their families are trying to survive and just get back to normal. For a lot of my kids, normal was a hard life to begin with. Now, for many of them, life has become even more complicated and difficult.
My Project
My students love to read a book while listening to a CD. They love to listen to stories, sometimes by themselves, and sometimes with a buddy. I would like to have more books for them to choose from the listening center. Reading along with a book on CD really does help to increase their reading fluency.
The writing boards we have do not have any writing lines on them. It would be so helpful for my students to have writing lines to guide them when they write sentences. If our boards were magnetic, we could also use our magnetic letters for making words on the boards, too. An electric pencil sharpener and markers would help with the writing process. Working with sight word puzzles will help to build their reading and writing skills.
Having a memory card for their camera will assist them when they're doing video projects. A camera case will help protect their camera when they're taking it somewhere to do projects.
The path to literacy is often a struggle for my students.
I want to help make it as fun and educational for them as I possibly can. These communication arts tools will really help us in our endeavor to strengthen and enrich their learning experience.
