This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom and school collection of leveled readers is very limited. Students need to be instructed with books on their individual reading levels. I use leveled readers for small group instruction and for my students to take home and read nightly
My first grade class currently has 19 students.
My school is in a very rural area of South Carolina. Many of my students are emergent and early readers who are at the brink of learning and using reading strategies that will help them decode words and comprehend books.
My Project
The set of books that I wish to obtain for my classroom consists of leveled books that I can use for small group reading instruction. These books would also be sent home with students so they can practice reading strategies they've been working on at home with their families. It is important that students use books that are on their instructional reading level. This collection of books contains books that cover an assortment of levels to reach the numerous levels of readers I have in my classroom.
Donations to fund this project will enable me to reach the various ability levels of my students by using books that are on their reading levels.
First grade is a crucial time to make sure that students learn decoding strategies when reading. These books would be a powerful resource in order to make sure my students have a variety of books that are on their instructional reading levels.
