I teach over 100 students daily. One of my classes is Advanced Mathematics where they are learning 7th grade math concepts as well as the entire 8th grade math curriculum. They are inquisitive learners who always want to know "why" and rarely just accept the answer as it is. I encourage in-depth thinking and want them to discover for themselves the way that mathematics works. I love when I present a new topic and see how inquisitive the students can be.
They have taught me more about learning than I could have ever imagined!
I also teach two regular education math classes. These students are learning 7th grade content standards. These two classes vary in learning ability and require the materials to be presented in a variety of ways. I love igniting an excitement of math within these students instead of a fear of the topic.
Lastly, I teach one class of special education mathematics. This class is considered an inclusion class with special needs students and low-level mathematicians. I strive daily to present the concepts in a way that creates an applicability of math to their everyday lives. I love the variety of students which I teach!
My Project
I am a strong advocate of having technology available to students in mathematics. I feel that technology is just as vital as paper and pencil for success in today's society. Within my school, we are lacking the technology needed for students to become fluent in its use. To be specific, we have three computer carts for the entire school. We are advocating for online education and resources, but not providing the technology students need in order to be successful. I create online activities, learning opportunities, differentiated lessons, and games for all students using technology, but students often have to find a way to provide their own. Websites provide differentiated videos that can assist students at an individual learning level and meet them where their learning needs are. I can adapt review activities to be technology centered using websites like Kahoot!, Quizlet Live, Desmos, Prodigy, and QR codes.
Students enjoy learning through the use of technology and they appreciate the differentiated techniques of learning!
The requested tablets would allow students to get immediate feedback on their education, access online learning tools, and see their grades for their own accountability purposes. Technology is a 21st century tool that all students need to have access to and their personal cell phones are not very reliable. By having the Fire Tablets I can easily monitor their usage and create more technology-centered assignments. It is a dream to have enough devices to no longer need cell phones in my classroom or have to partner up the students who do not have access to technology and this would help me obtain that goal!
