Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live on the southside of Tucson. They are a primarily Hispanic population with a high number of new generation Somalian families. This builds diverse classrooms and it makes me feel like I am making palpable impact with these students because I also work with the community.
My favorite thing about my students is their curiosity and unique outlook on the world.
Their connection to the outside world comes to them through literacy and technology. Literacy is the strongest connection I can help them to connect with the outside world.
They build strong relationships with their school friends because they all come from the same neighborhood. They have strong ties to their family traditions and routines. For them, school IS their world.
My Project
On Demand writing is the ability for students to read an article and either write an informational or opinion essay using the information from a reading. Students must be able to read a short passage and use the passage for information.
Students must use grade level texts that are relevant to their essay and interests.
Scholastic News is a text that is leveled and can encourage students to write about events that are happening in the moment.
They will get to take the text home when they are done which makes the text available for them read over and over again. This will also encourage other members of the family to read at home.
