My students need 30 copies of the SAT vocabulary novel "The Mayan Mission" to give them authentic vocabulary for the State English 2 test they must pass for graduation.
I teach the best students in the world! There is only one problem - they come from homes where one or more parent has not finished high school or cannot read. I teach English 2 in a state that mandates mastery of a state English 2 test for graduation. Many of my students would love to read at a higher level, but have never been given the tools to achieve this or a supportive home environment that can support this growth.
In addition to our parents' lack of education, our school is the smallest in a large school district with the largest amount of poverty in the district. We are a rural school and cannot offer many of the programs/activities that our district counterparts receive funding for within the city limits. We have no corporate sponsors as the only business within our reach is a small gas station. In spite of these obstacles, we are a level 4 school. With state testing guidelines becoming more rigorous this year, our methodology and materials must be updated to meet the challenge.
This project would provide a class set of a high interest, high vocabulary novels for my students to work with. This will not only provide them with high-level reading experiences which will improve fluency, but will also improve their limited vocabularies with the words and word meanings on the same page for easy reference. As students are exposed to advanced language, their critical thinking, reading, and vocabulary skills will propel them closer to meeting their goals of high school graduation and scoring higher on entrance exams for colleges.
Through your generous donation, my students will have a chance to experience language that many will never hear at home or in the community in which they live. This will give them an opportunity to be successful in "the real world" and will give them one of the tools they need to take the next step toward becoming successful adults and community leaders. Through your generosity, students will begin a journey to change that which has gone before and make a fresh start in our community and in our families.
