Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My new district is Title I and has 25% of ESL students. My classes are sixth grade English Language Arts. I will be partnered with two core teachers and will work specifically with beginner and intermediate English Language Learners.
Teaching ELL students in ELA places a high emphasis on foundation work and having the students buy into and value earning a strong education.
I try to make the class as engaging as possible by including station work several days a week. Stations include grammar and writing, literature, vocabulary building, speaking, and projects. Students are provided classwork in two-week intervals. These assignments can be worked on as the student would like which makes the stations more personalized. Technology is also integrated daily.
The structure of my class promotes high expectations for the students. By only teaching the group for the first 20-30 minutes of every class, the students are then given time to build professional skills such as time management, prioritizing, organization and accountability.
This year I will be incorporating the concept of book clubs into my classes. I have been building a classroom library over the past year and want students reading books of high interest.
My Project
I am super excited to begin a new school year, in a new school district, and in a new state. Everything is new! Hopefully, this will include bookcases for the 1,000+ new books I have collected over the past year.)
Since my focus will be working with 6th grade ELL English Language Arts, I want to expose my kids to graphic novels, novels in verse, and chapter books.
I'd like the students to build your stack throughout the year and during the final week of school be able to take pride in the number of books read and their Lexile level improvement.
Having ESL students buy into improving their English abilities in the four domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing is crucial in their first year. What better way to do it?
