My students need a wellness and mindfulness room with items such as a weighted blanket, yoga mats, a ball chair, a floor lamp, lap desks, clay and coloring books they can use to center themselves and relieve anxiety.
The students that I work with are from a high achieving school district. As with many, many schools and universities across the United States, reported levels of anxiety and stress related illnesses have risen each year. My school's Section 504 referrals for anxiety have increased each year as well.
With the creation of a wellness and mindfulness room for the students, I am hoping to decrease the number of student absences and visits to the nurse due to anxiety.
Not only will this place be a quiet, peaceful room, it will also be a learning room.
My Project
I would like to create a wellness and mindfulness center for the students. My vision is that the students can come into a quiet and relaxed setting to decompress and go through yoga poses, as well as various mindfulness exercises to regain their focus and stay present.
If they choose, students can sit and find their center in comfortable chairs, listening to soothing music, tracing a calming mandalynth or even coloring.
My wish is that the wellness room will decrease the number of student absences and visits to the nurse due to anxiety, while also teaching students how to identify their triggers and teach various methods to cope and take care of themselves.
