My students need two dozen titles from the award-winning 'Olivia' series; these will go in the school library and will appeal to 1st - 3rd graders.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Please help us put OLIVIA books in our school library. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivia_(fictional_pig). These award-winning books will appeal to 1st-3rd graders (especially as there's also an OLIVIA TV series) and (most importantly) will help hook our younger readers onto chapter books.
How many students will this project impact?
About 240. That's the number of kids in our school who are on the same reading level as the OLIVIA books. I'll just give you a little background about our school. It is a K-8 Center in South Florida. Our parents tend to be immigrants with poorly-paid jobs in the tourism industry. Most of our kids are first-generation Americans. Over 80% receive free or reduced lunch. Very few of our children patronize the public library: our SCHOOL library plays a VITAL role in turning them into regular readers.
My Project
OLIVIA should really boost reading among our younger kids. It is an ideal book series for our library. Here's why: The OLIVIA books have won numerous awards (did you check out that Wikipedia link? All the awards are listed there); OLIVIA has been made into an animated series on children's TV - so the books will have instant name recognition (the most popular books in our library are from the Spongebob series - same phenomenon!); and - last but not least - the OLIVIA books are beginning chapter books. That's very significant: they'll help our second and third-graders make the all-important transition from picture books to chapter books. They are not too easy; not too hard. Just what those kids need.
How will donations to this project make a difference?
These books will be checked out by 200+ children annually. These kids probably don't patronize the public library, so a well-stocked SCHOOL library makes all the difference to them. OLIVIA is certain to attract the children: it has won numerous awards and has a TV tie-in. Finally, remember that OLIVIA will help our munchkins switch from easy books to full-blown chapter books. We'd love to have OLIVIA in our library! Thanks for reading this!
