Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have the privilege of teaching at an elementary school in Southwest Washington, D.C. We are a Title I focus school. We have some truly phenomenal students at our school who come to school each morning full of energy, questions, and wonder. They are truly amazing humans and deserve all necessary support to meet their goals.

Our final unit of the year is old versus new - a unit where students will get to experience technology from other eras.

My aim is to give them hands-on experience with items from an older era.

My Project

Our final unit of the year involves students looking at technology and how it has progressed over the years. We will be not only looking at modern technology (typing, computers, and the internet), but also day to day technological advances.

Before there were typewriters, there were quills and ink!

My aim is to expose my students to the amount of effort it took to write a letter, and the importance of penmanship. In addition to writing with a quill and ink, students will be sealing their letters with sealing wax and a stamp!

Why do we need rock salt? To make ice cream of course! By taking time to create butter and ice cream from scratch, I think my students will begin to understand that we have things easy in 2018, and it used to take a lot of time and effort to complete simple tasks.
