Help me give my students the opportunity to learn and create the vintage art of photography by using instant cameras and film so they get the experience of shooting photos the "old school" way!
My students are amazing. They are motivated learners and generally excel at traditional academics in which our high school strongly promotes. As an urban public high school that happens to be situated in a higher-income area, the misconception is that our school receives plenty of funding when in fact we receive considerably less than other schools due to the large discrepancy in socioeconomic backgrounds, and as a result, funding is limited for electives such as my photography class. Our students need more learning opportunities that expose them to different career paths or lets them explore their passions.
My Project
These days, it's rare to have a student in photography who has even touched a film camera or even know that at one time, photographs had to be printed out in order to view them! So to give them a fun history lesson and take a break from their rapid fire picture taking of digital photography, they're going to be forced to use only a few frames of instant film to make their photograph.
We're mashing up seventies style Polaroid photography with modern photography trends with this super fun and creative photography project.
We're going to draw inspiration from the seventies style by using lace backdrops (the table cloths) and smoke machines in an outdoor photo shoot to create individual album covers. This project and lesson is definitely going to be a big hit with the students (and their Instagrams).
