Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my school are predominantly Hispanic, Eastern European, African and African-American. Eighty percent of my students are considered low-income, and thus qualify for the free lunch program. They attend a public school in the third largest district in the country, Chicago. Unfortunately, my school district has been experiencing budget cuts, which affects every school's supply and resource budgets. Regardless, my students are amazing; they make the best with what little we have and shine every day despite this setback.
My Project
I have been teaching Spanish language since 2007 in Chicago Public Schools. I taught various levels of Spanish language in high school for the first 6 years of my teaching career, which included Spanish language for Spanish language learners and Spanish for heritage speakers. In 2013, I switched to teach in elementary, where I now teach various levels of Spanish for students in grades Pre-K to 8.
To update and improve my craft as a Spanish language teacher, I need to attend the 2018 The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages to network and train with other Spanish language teachers from across the United States.
By attending this conference I will not only have the opportunity to meet other teaching professionals from across the county but have the opportunity to exchange ideas that would help me better serve my students and their quest to learn and improve their Spanish communication skills. More so, the conference also offers many workshops that I would like to attend to help me update and improve my teaching approach and make me be more efficient in the classroom.
