Boomer? Sooner! Sooner or later my third graders will be moving on to the next grade and they need to know all about our great state! We need curriculum to help us teach and learn Sooner, not later!
I have an amazing class of 29 students this year that range from reading levels of 1st grade to 6th grade.
More than half of these students are military dependents, and more than half have an African-American heritage. I have three student that boast a Native American heritage of Choctaw and Cherokee, and even a student from Jamaica! Amidst our diversity there are a few students from Anglo-Saxon heritage, and a few native-born Boomer Sooner students!
My Project
This year our state changed the Social Studies curriculum for 3rd grade, and we are now tasked with teaching Oklahoma history. This is a wonderful thing for us except there was no money given to the schools to purchase new materials and books that are at our reading levels. Any materials I might find in school are 4th grade reading and up, and those classes are using them.
This list of reading materials I am requesting are geared to our range of readers, are non-fiction to meet the goals of 50% informational text reading in schools, and have hands-on learning activities. These books are necessary to practice and improve our research skills, reading skills, and learning to read for information. This is a new skills for our grade level, and we need help!
Teaching my students to be knowledge seekers and making their own connections to the amazing world we live in is a priority to me.
I also believe that students need hands-on activities to sharpen their coordination and thinking. I want my students to be have met all the learning objectives this year, but I can't do that without these books. My students are eager to read more about our state than just the few websites we've found. Our Boomer Sooner students need books Sooner!
