My students love to create, critique, and explore a variety of styles of art, as well as famous artists. However, we are lacking the needed, and sometimes basic, supplies to create our wonderful masterpieces. One supply we have never been able to use is oil pastels. Can you imagine how excited they will be to use this medium in class for the first time?
100% of my students are on free/reduced lunch.
Most of them come from a middle class and low socioeconomic status. They live in a rural small community. Some of them were also affected by the Great Flood of August 2016.
My Project
My students will be able to use the oil pastels to learn more about value and blending, as well as the scratching technique. This medium will help us with line, color theory, point of view, dimensions, depth, overlapping, and distortion. We will also be able to use them when studying Modiglian, Matisse, Van Gogh, Kandinsky, and Picasso. In doing so, we will learn more about Cubism, the Abstract movement, and Expressionism. Imagine their level of engagement and excitement when creating cubist self-portraits and reproductions of some of the most famous works of art the world has to offer, shortly having learning about them in class.
