This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am an art teacher in an urban public high school, with a high number of students living on or below poverty level. I teach all grade levels from 9th grade through 12th grade.
My students are unfortunately deprived of many art experiences because they have only one art teacher and only one art class for their entire four years of high school. On my limited budget, I am only able to buy the 'basic' art materials, such as tempera paint, colored pencils, markers and paper. Although I do my best to expose students to all different forms of art - because of supply limitations we can only DO so much. I believe that my creative, talented and amazing students deserve to have as many experiences as possible given the short amount of time that they are exposed to art.
I would love for my students to have the experience of oil painting before they leave high school. I also have many students that would love to go to an arts college or university, but lack the portfolios and training necessary to compete with their peers in other schools with more comprehensive art departments. Through providing the experience of oil painting, my students will not only learn more about art, and one of it's most treasured mediums, they will also be able to build the portfolios they need to be accepted into an art school.
Your donation ensures that my students will be able to build a comprehensive portfolio for entrance into art schools and also gain the important experience and knowledge about oil painting, which has been the most prevalent, enduring and treasured mediums of art for hundreds of years.
