Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our high school is a Title I public school located in Arizona. We serve a diverse group of students, grades 9-12, from all backgrounds. I am pleased to say that our visual arts department has grown in the past few years to the extent that we were able to add a second art teacher to the school and offer separate 2D and 3D classes all day. This growth is a direct reflection of student interest in visual arts and their need for a creative outlet.
In our visual arts classes, students are exposed to materials, cultures and forms of visual communication that are often not offered in other classes.
The barriers and lack of resources many of our students are faced with can be a struggle that blind them of the futures they are absolutely capable of. I strive to provide them with information to broaden their view of the world and the encouragement to work toward the goals that they set. Students are able to see their potential and celebrate their successes in the work they create each day.
My Project
Oil painting is a long-standing, traditional media used by artists for centuries. Not being able to teach this media to our serious Advanced Art students seems a disservice. I aim to prepare our students to be college-ready and/or have the knowledge and skills to go into art related careers.
The inclusion of oil paintings into these students' portfolios would also create a more thorough showcase of their abilities while highlighting their versatility.
Blick and Van Gogh Oil Paints are a student-grade and more cost-effective paint but with working characteristics similar to professional oils. Equipping students with not only the experience of using oil paints first hand but the lesson information about its history and evolution would also be educationally enriching.
