This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Ohh the places they'll go...when my students can pick up a book. To foster and encourage a love of reading, texts need to be readily accessible to students. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to experience life outside of the boundaries of our city due to various circumstances, mainly due to financial reasons, however when you provide them with a plethora of reading material, ohh the places they'll go!! Classroom libraries are important because students need immediate and frequent access to books to encourage reading as well as providing a venue where teachers and students can easily recommend books to each other. I NEVER punish my students for not returning a book as most of the time they have passed it along it has found a home with them. With this, my shelves are becoming bare and in need of fulfillment in order to continue to allow my students places to go!!!
My Project
Students need an escape! What better way to block out the world, expand their vocabulary, and become more fluent analytical thinkers and problems solvers all while going places by reading a book!!
Parting the first page of a book and beginning to read the first line, then the first page then the first chapter and so on allows students to expand their knowledge and provide information to discuss, reason and defend.
Which in return helps cultivate a well rounded, knowledgeable young individual. Having a shelf full of high interest novels for them to choose from is vital to the places they'll go!!!
