Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's scary entering a new class for the first time and I have 4 new students for the upcoming year doing just that! I want them to feel welcome to our "Ohana" or "family" and ready to learn!!
My students are incredible.
I have 25 motivated English Learner students eager to learn. My students come from a low socioeconomic background with limited resources available. We are a Title 1, Performance Improvement school with 100% free lunch program. Many parents work 2 jobs and are struggling to support the family.
Though their environment may not be conducive to learning, they have an insatiable love of learning. I know that if we provide them with the right support, resources, and opportunities, they can experience success.
My Project
I am excited to say that I will be "looping" with my current class. That means that I will be their 2nd grade teacher. I have added 4 new students to the mix and they don't have any of the supplies that my current class has. We need 4 name tags so they will know which group they are in, toobaloos to hear themselves as they read, seat sacks so they can keep their homework folder and materials in a safe location. They will also need their own earbuds for sanitary reasons. These earbuds will be used weekly as they "Listen to Reading" during Daily Five. I added baskets for each student to store in their desk so they can keep their toobaloos, crayon box and money container in a safe place and out of the reach of others.
I want my students to all start on the same playing field where no one is lacking supplies just because they are new to the class.
I want everyone to feel welcome on the first day of school where everyone is on the "same page"!
Ohana means "family", and "family" means no one is left behind!
