Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is an urban, alternative high-school. Students in our school have often experienced immense trauma before they reach us. Their past traumatic experiences, along with other factors, have made traditional school extremely difficult.
Our school serves as a safe, welcoming environment for students so that they can graduate on time, gain self-efficacy and become empowered members of their communities.
Our students seek comfort from our school, teachers and staff. We hope to provide them with items to protect them from the elements this winter.
My Project
I am hoping to be able to give my students gloves, socks and hats to keep them warm this winter. Many students do not have these items available to them. They stand at the bus stop in the mornings freezing cold. Then they arrive at school wet and chilled. This makes it difficult for them to start learning. Often times they do not want to stand in the cold waiting for the bus so our attendance drops and their chances of success decrease.
These students often spend a lot of time walking because they do not have access to transportation.
Students often have to bundle up inside of their houses if they do not have utilities turned on.
