Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a fantastic group of 7th and 8th grade students who love to learn, ask questions, and advocate for themselves. We are located in a large urban school system in Illinois.
My students have created a wonderfully positive classroom learning environment for themselves. The students sincerely respect each other and foster a true sense of community within our class. The one thing the students consistently ask for is more books!
As a new teacher, it's difficult for me to furnish everything the students need with my own money. It would be a dream come true for these students to receive the gift of literacy. My students would be able to borrow "just right" books at their reading level to bring home and read and then bring back to school to share with their peers. They will be able to use these books to practice comprehension strategies that they will be able to showcase on standardized tests, or simply cozy up in a quiet corner of the classroom to read quietly during silent reading time.
A classroom library would complete our community in more ways than one. My students have an empty book shelf just waiting to be filled with positive, classic novels that will both enlighten and inspire them. Books are something that they want and truly deserve.
