Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in grades 4 and 5 but developmentally they are at a grade 2 or 3 level of performance. Even though they are all intellectually disabled and some are deaf or hard of hearing or visually impaired, they are all very eager and motivated to learn.
Many of my students have not had the chance to travel far from their own neighborhoods due to finances or parents working, or too many people in the family, which limits the experiences my students have had over the years.
Additionally, they all have communication delays, which hinders their abilities to share feelings and connect with others socially.
My Project
The TIME for Kids magazine subscription will allow my students to learn about the world, current events, and cultures without leaving their classroom. The different grade levels of magazines will allow me to differentiate instruction for all my students no matter what level of reading they might be at. My students are creative, inquisitive, and full of adventure! They absolutely love to learn through active engagement and multi-modality learning. They need to learn about real-world events and discover there is a whole other world beyond their home and school environment. My students are individuals who need guidance and consideration to help them learn and thrive in their environment no matter what their disabilities may be.
