Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I Urban school in Chattanooga, Tennessee. My students are ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) learners from grades Kindergarten through 2nd grade. My school is made up of 653 students. One hundred percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our population is made up of 40% of students who are classified as ELL’s (English Language Learners) and they receive direct ESOL services.
My students are not always offered an environment that is conducive to learning in their home lives.
When they come to school, they are given a stable environment that allows their brains to flourish. If I were granted this opportunity, it would allow my students to develop critical thinking skills, extra practice with standards that are being taught in the classroom, real world applications, and results that would greatly impact their future.
My Project
This project will provide a resource for my students to get real-time feedback and self-assess. By recording their voice and hearing it back, students can hear their mistakes rather than rely on an instructor trying to replicate errors in pronunciation or usage. This project will give every teacher on my team a tool for independent practice and formative assessment.
Self-regulation is an important life skill for students.
We are working to create self-reliance and independence in our young learners. The more tools students have to self-asses the more independent practice will become a regular habit. Low-tech tools such as these recorders are easy for my young learners to master.
