Our school is a Title I school trying to provide the always-changing resources needed to coordinate with the current educational standards, which also change often. This school year, I am fortunate enough to be teaching a group of kiddos with special needs.
This group of students comes from a small, rural school that houses approximately two hundred and fifty students grades K through sixth.
Most of these students come from low-income homes.
These particular students are high-energy and have the ability to design and create wonderful things with their academic successes. The obstacle they face is not having the resources needed to support their creativity. Teachers in our district work hard to think "outside the box" to find ways to meet the students' needs the best we can, but the financial needs are greater than most teachers can work with.
My Project
This year, I am privileged to teach a big group of special needs students! Since my classes are full this year, I have a shortage of technology devices. Coming from such a small rural school, it is hard to provide all the resources they need. This project will help meet those needs.
Many students lack life experiences to draw upon.
Virtual Reality gives them the opportunity for these experiences. Let's face it, the average citizen is not a world traveler, but through VR, anyone can experience the thrill seeing and learning of new things.
Virtual Reality (VR) can provide my students with experiences they may never have in the real world. I have students all the time that have never been on any type of vacation or trip away from home. Some of my students haven't even left our little town. Imagine how hard it would be to write about your favorite trip when you never had one. With VR, a student can travel to famous tourist sites or camp under the stars!
Teaching social studies and literacy together, gives me the prime opportunity to combine VR travel with financial literacy. My students will plan travel itineraries and budgets to visit the thirteen original colonies, archeological sites, then take virtual reality field trips via the Oculus Go VR headsets. New life experiences are endless with virtual reality.
