My students need copies of Dr. Seuss books, such as "O, The Places You'll Go" and "And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street", the first book he wrote.
Our school is located on the outskirts of Thomasville, NC. We serve students in grades Pre-K to 5, and we are a Title 1 school. More than 60% of our students are economically disadvantaged. There are approximately 450 students in our entire student body, and there are many avid readers in this group.
Our students love to read books written by Theodor Seuss Geisel, and he is one of their favorite authors.
He is usually better known as "Dr. Seuss". His use of rhyme, make-believe words, and tongue-twisters provide hours of entertainment and learning for students and their parents as they read together.
We would like to celebrate "Dr. Seuss'" birthday on March second, which is also "Read Across America Day", but our library collection lacks an adequate number of copies and many have become tattered and need replacing. We lack funding to purchase books by this incredible author. Please help us provide these books for our students, and promote literacy in our community as we celebrate this favorite author.
My Project
Access to copies of Dr. Seuss books will provide students opportunities for educational entertainment. These titles will also assist in improving student reading fluency and comprehension. Dr. Seuss's unique way of writing and the use of rhyme helps children understand language.
Many of our Seuss titles are tattered and worn, evidence that these books are among the most popular and well-loved books in our collection.
Reluctant readers are drawn to his characters and writing style, encouraging even the most uncertain to attempt and enjoy Dr. Seuss books.
These books will be placed in the school media center, and will be made available to all students, teachers, and staff members. These titles will also be utilized for special occasions, such as March 2nd. This is Dr. Seuss's birthday, and our school will participate in "Read Across America" on this day in his honor.
