Ms. Glennon from Charlotte NC is requesting educational kits & games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need classroom materials focused on literacy. An easel will help tremendously with displaying read alouds and teaching reading skills, as will the other literacy based centers.

"Children can ask a question a wise man cannot answer." Author unknown. As an educator, your job is to teach your students. However, what I have learned in my years as an educator, is that my students truly teach and inspire ME more than I could ever imagine. As children who are considered "at-risk", they overcome severe obstacles on a daily basis in their lives at home, prior to ever stepping into my classroom. Many of the basic needs we take for granted, are not always afforded them. Consequently, resourcefulness, resilience, perseverance and determination become pillars of their character, even at the tender age of 5. Through their eyes, I am able to see a world that is filled with hope, empathy and humble servitude through the use of our unique gifts, meant to help one another.
Many of my students come from single-parent homes, in which the parent works multiple jobs to make ends meet, thus understandably may not always be home to assist with homework.
This is what makes it imperative that I make the most of the time I have with them. I have never been more proud of a group of students!
These materials will assist my students in developing key reading skills in a manner that reaches various learning modalities. The touch and say materials will be a great tool for those who learn best through the tactile/hands-on approach.
The listening center with Dr. Seuss books will lend itself to students who learn best audit-orally.
Students whose learning style is visual will greatly benefit from the small group easel as well as the large double sided easel, as they will be better able to engage with read aloud books, including big books with larger print and illustrations. Having a variety of new books to read in the classroom library will keep my students motivated to read independently and with one another!
The leveled sight words center will be an incredible asset for students to continually practice their sight words in a fun way. The Creating Sight Word Sentences kit will allow them to see the words in context, where oftentimes they are merely memorizing them from flashcards. This will help them to better recognize the words within the books we read, and will be additional practice for recognizing proper sentence structure.
Lastly, the Picture It Daily Comprehension Activity Cards will give students an opportunity to practice demonstrating understanding what they have read in a way that is attainable at any level, since they include pictures. This will allow all students to achieve success, thereby increasing their confidence and increasing the chances of them developing a love of reading, which is the ultimate goal!
