Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My urban kindergarteners and first graders love Dr. Seuss, but until a few weeks ago, few of them actually had a copy of any books by Dr. Seuss at home. In fact, many of my students do not have access to lots of books at home and don't have someone at home who is available to read to them everyday.
My students are eager to learn and full of energy.
Many of my families are unable to take them to the library or to provide access to lots of books at home, so it is crucial that I provide as many opportunities as possible to expose them to the pleasure of having someone read aloud a story to them--especially if it is one of their first book acquisitions.
Our small Title 1 school is located in an urban, high poverty neighborhood in Northern California. At least 81% of our students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program. 80% of my students are English language learners.
My Project
I am requesting 27 copies of the classic hardcover Dr. Seuss book, Oh the Places You'll Go. By being able to offer each student the book as a way to celebrate the end of the school year in June, I hope to encourage families to read together, while the children begin to recognize and memorize the many high frequency words in the story.
This book will provide a way for my students to gain familiarity with the text and develop their listening and reading skills, which is especially important for my English language learners. Furthermore, engaging books can get my children excited about learning how to read for themselves.
I want to instill a love of books in my young students and encourage them to view books as fun adventures to explore. It is crucial that they view reading in a positive way, so that they are more likely to become lifelong readers.
I want my kindergarteners and first graders to learn to read, enjoy and treasure quality children's literature at an early age and to encourage home literacy.
Many of my first graders will be able to read their books to other family members by June!
