Learning is a process that unfolds through daily dedication and persistence.
My students are hard working and devoted, even in the face of conflict.
Progress is judged by effort. And things that seem simple, like raising your hand to answer a question, are considered small victories because when learning is difficult, sharing becomes scary. This is just one way I am reminded every single day that teachers are one small part of a much greater team. That team is every face that is looking back at me, reminding me of my purpose.
I stand in awe of our children, your children, because they surprise me day after day with their ability to take risks, help one another and find meaning in their learning.
My Project
Reading challenges present themselves in many different ways. There are children who are impressively fluent but somehow are unable to understand most of what they read. Then, there are those who read with a very choppy and disjointed fluency, however, they are able to recite the meaning of the passage and explain the author's purpose.
By supporting a child's personal reading level, and giving them a place to read that feels safe, the places they can go are limitless!
How do we best meet the needs of such an immensely diverse population of readers that are all expected to read at or above grade level (many core subjects such as science or social studies are oftentimes written 1-2 years above grade level) and understand what they read?
I have students that are reading at a 1st-grade reading level, as well as those that are securely reading at a 5th-grade reading level. This gap leaves a WIDE range of necessary reading materials. While our media center is amazing at supplying books for lower level readers, it's simply not able to house the supply necessary to give my lower readers the same type of range and depth as what is available to the "majority" of readers that make up our 5-6 grade building.
They could use this as their number one resource when the media center books have become over-familiar, or simply if they'd like a little more privacy when picking books that don't always look like a typical "chapter book".
