My Students

About 74% of students at my school are economically disadvantaged, and I do believe this contributes to a deficit of vocabulary knowledge. I love sharing what I am able to materially. Also, I love not only teaching them content, but as a second career teacher, I share life experiences which hopefully helps them socially. There are some great, funny personalities in my classes, and I enjoy being myself with them, so they hopefully know they in turn can be themselves with me.

My Project

My subject is Civics, and I am a huge proponent of vocabulary. There are so many words that we assume students know the meaning of, when they don't. I want to be more intentional about identifying those words as we go through lessons, so that my students will have not only the meaning of the word, but also tying it to something relevant in their world today. An easel to visualize this will be a great tool. Students can use markers to write words on it themselves throughout the unit. Also, using interactive videos is a great tool, and having headphones for students to use with the Chromebooks will ensure access and focus.
