My students need 2 DSLR cameras to learn about and practice proper photo composition and to take photos for the yearbook. I requested Canon Rebel cameras as they are easy to learn/use although a bit pricey.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a mixed level group of students who are excited to build a meaningful yearbook for the student body. Almost all are Latino and come from low-income families and qualify for free lunch. Previously, the yearbook was put together by a volunteer adviser, and a handful of juniors and seniors who met after school a few times a year. This coming school year will be the first year we are able to offer the yearbook as a class rather than a club. We opened up one section to 10-12 graders, and we had over 100 students apply for 30 spots. Given this level of enthusiasm, we want the yearbook class to live up to the student expectations for next year!
Our school is a place where students are encouraged to follow their curious minds and take ownership of what they are learning.
The subject matter is personalized and students are able to work at their own pace to master the skills and competencies set forth in the syllabus. We aim to meet our students where they are academically, socially, and emotionally then push them toward mastery of the content and skills as the school year unfolds.
My Project
The old saying equates a picture with a thousand words. Without the tools to create the picture, those words and the stories of those pictured will be at best under-represented and at worst lost. It's important to be able to teach students how to take control of their images to tell their own stories; stories that define who they are and what they do. These fundamental visual storytelling skills are needed for a quality yearbook. It not only gives the agency to the students who create the yearbook, but it brings the school together as a whole when they see themselves shine in the pages.
Visual storytelling requires students to capture images with cameras and use sequencing, editing, and graphic design to lead readers/viewers through the story.
Our students do not have their own cameras nor are they allowed access to their cell phones during school, so we will need to have cameras that they can use during class.
Starting off with two high quality DSLR cameras, SD cards, and card readers will allow groups of students to gain photography skills that will be directly used to create the yearbook. Students will feel empowered to represent the story of their year in an authentic and professional way.
