My students arrive to class with optimism and enthusiasm, and expect that their teachers will provide a space for meaningful academic opportunities every day. As their teacher, I have to acknowledge -- and do my best to work against -- some of the barriers that students may have to success.
My students are eager to be challenged and to gain skills and practices that will open doors for their future.
They need to know that their teachers believe they deserve equal access to all supplies for school tasks.
Our school is a Title 1 school, meaning that a high percentage of our students come from low-income families. This makes longer term projects that require access to computer technology a challenge for many.
With your help, I hope to remove some of the barriers that may keep students from maximizing their educational experiences.
My Project
Student reflections indicate that Romeo & Juliet is the least favorite reading of the year due to the challenging language. After all, it is hard to create mental pictures when struggling to decode the text!
These graphic novels will allow students to engage with Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet in a way that is engaging and accessible.
The books will help fill in gaps in understanding and allow for students to better understand stage direction. The No Fear Shakespeare books present the text in "modernized" English, while the Hinds text uses Shakespearean English. Hinds also illustrates using a more diverse "cast" than many traditional renditions of Romeo & Juliet. My students appreciate anytime that diversity is brought into the classroom, and I know they will appreciate these texts.
By providing these books, I will be able to give my students a better chance to succeed. Students can get ahead in the text and know what is coming up. Students can catch up quickly if they are falling behind.
These texts will draw in my visual learners. These books will especially help my ESL and low reading level students.
