This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Each day I have the great privilege of teaching seventeen three- and four-year-old students. Through play we learn math and literacy content, but also important language and life skills. We learn to communicate our needs, build enduring friendships and be proud of who we are and who we are becoming.

We are a tight-knit HeadStart classroom located in a public school in the southeast quadrant of Washington, DC.

The community surrounding our school has many needs. Yet in spite of their challenges, my students arrive each day eager to learn, create and prepare for the wider world.

My Project

We have several baby dolls in our classroom, but no clothes. When we pulled the baby dolls out, several kids exclaimed, "They're naked!" As I transition to a new classroom I am slowly learning what supplies we do and do not have. Although we are excited to have baby dolls, we need to have clothes for them.

These baby doll clothes will allow us opportunities to practice our fine motor skills, to make connections and to play.

We will use these baby doll clothes in many of our family centers. In our bedroom center we pretend to play getting our babies ready for bed. Getting our babies into and out of pajamas is an essential part of this play. We will use these baby doll clothes in our laundromat center as well. In this center we will practice hanging up the baby doll clothes that we "wash" in our pretend washing machine. We will use these baby doll clothes in so many of our centers throughout the school year.
