My students need Sitspots to create new ways to help us learn our numbers. Kindergartners learn best when movement is involved and repetition, and having these spots with our numbers can provide ample opportunities for this!
Excited, creative, ready to learn and explore - that's my group of kindergartners! My students come to class ready to experience new things and to learn as much as they can. I teach at a school with a diverse population, including many students receiving free lunches and from families that tend to relocate during the year (either moving into our classroom or to a new school). We are very proud of all of our students, that while our students come from a high needs population we are seeing growth every day!
In my classroom, it is my goal that they find a welcoming environment where they can learn, explore and feel accepted just as they are.
My Project
In kindergarten we are working hard to learn about numbers, about counting and just seeing numbers and knowing what they are! Some of my kids are getting stuck, having a hard time keeping up with their peers. I wanted to find a way to incorporate more numbers and movement into their days, and with these Sitspots I can do just that. We can have them as line spots, carpet spots (so kids can work on numbers they struggle with or the counting sequence).
We can also place them around the room so kids can move/jump onto the different numbers as they count, which as you can imagine the kids would love to do!
With the number sets we will have circles with numbers 1-36 which hit our kindergarten standards for most of the year. We will also have some blank ones so that we can add numbers as we go so that these will grow with us as a class! Having a way to engage students in counting and number identification in a fun, tactile, physical way would help so many of my students who struggle with the abstract concept of numbers.
