Our school represents 22 different countries, a true melting pot of cultures. These different cultures bring with them a variety of learning styles and skill sets. As a teacher, I strive to meet all of these students and their unique abilities. In today's world, engagement is crucial. Creating experiences in learning that will create a love of learning and the desire to be a life long learner is the goal. Building a classroom community and relationships that empower my students is what makes this possible.
Diversity is key in all aspects of my classroom.
Diverse learners require diverse lessons to keep students engaged. We play games, we read with microphones and flashlights, we do call and response, we complete STEM challenges, we compete...we engage and we learn.
Options increase engagement! With the requested ball chairs, bean bags , saucer chairs and folding chairs, my students will be offered the option of where they want to sit each day. They must choose a seat that not only promotes comfort, but also their learning. Each of the requested seats will allow students to move without distracting the class.
With these flexible seating choices, suddenly coming to class is exciting and my students will want to be there early in order to choose their favorite seat.
Each student is empowered to make their own choice instead of being confined to the traditional desk. Flexible seating allows students to focus on the teacher instead of finding a comfortable position. Allowing this choice enhances student responsibility and self management.
