Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are fun, intelligent, interesting, and inquisitive to say the least . They have tons of energy that keep me busy all day! Most days , the kids arrive to school and we work on the same things as other children all over the country. We learn about numbers, shapes, colors, letters, etc.
So what makes my kids different from most other classes?
They are immigrants that have no English language. They come to our school not only trying to learn all the concepts expected in pre-k , but they are also trying to learn and build vocabulary in a second new language. They live in the highest poverty area of all Fort Worth , Texas. Most of my students struggle to have their basic needs such as food, clothing , and housing met everyday. Their financial resources are so limited that more often than not they go without the school supplies they need to learn .
The school they attend services the two housing projects in Fort Worth, Texas. Most students have social emotional trauma, they lack family structure and live in poverty.
My Project
Setting smart nutritional standards early on in young learners is vital! From a young age they must understand the importance of eating right to maintain their health and strength. That's why in Pre-k , I believe it's important to have a dramatic play area focused in health and nutrition.
What better way to teach these skills than with a farmers market !
The items I have picked will help students learn to choose healthy options of fruits and vegetables when they go food shopping.Seeing the pretend meals I've requested will expose students to beneficial options. Making these meals a daily habit in their lives. This center will also teach number sense as students will work with numbers by counting objects, portions and managing money.
Most importantly , students will be learning about health and science in a fun and exciting way!
