The food, the rides, the animals, the exhibits...We're going to the county fair! Many of my students have not experienced this local annual tradition. By being able to submit art projects to this local exhibit, students can take a school trip to experience this event.
My school is a rural school containing grades 3-5.
Our school qualifies as a Title I school. My students make up the intellectually gifted population of this school. Many of these students are economically disadvantaged and not afforded the experiences of higher income school districts. By being able to purchase art materials, students will be able to create artwork influenced by local artists. Not only will they be able to develop an appreciation for our local artists, they will also be able to experience a local tradition Students' artwork will be entered into the local art contest allowing them a sense of accomplishment.
My Project
Do you remember going to the beach and the feeling of sand between your toes? The Mississippi Gulf Coast offers sandy beaches and a rich artistic culture. Students will create an original work of sand art inspired by our beautiful beaches and barrier islands. They will also gain an appreciation of one of our most famous artists, Walter Anderson. Students will create a block art print inspired by the alphabet he created. We need linoleum, cutting tools, sand and mats to complete our project.
The curriculum designed for these intellectually gifted students should go above and beyond what is taught in the regular classroom.
By affording these students with these opportunities to express themselves, we may find our next famous artist within our community.
