Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Bullying is a daily reality in many middle schools across the country. Unfortunately, many middle school students are caught up in the role of being a bystander and do not realize their collective power.
My students are typical middle school students---rambunctious, curious, eager explorers---and like all other students their age, can be insecure and unsure of themselves.
They are still learning social boundaries and can sometimes act inappropriately. This is especially true when it comes to bullying behaviors. Although most middle school students are not bullies, most have been bystanders, which can often make the problem of bullying worse.
Many of my students come from economically challenged households, and over 90% of our school population qualifies for free (or reduced price) lunch through the Federal Lunch Program. Unfortunately, some of my students witness acts of bullying and violence throughout their community.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of Bullying in Schools by Townsend Press to help teach students about the harm brought about by bullying. The class set of Bystander by James Preller that I am requesting will help students focus on the role of bystanders. Many times, bystanders have a collective power to stop bullying. Most students, however, are unaware of their destructive role as bystanders. The books that I am requesting would empower students to take an active role in combating bullying.
Middle school is our last best chance to affect positive social change for many students.
To help combat the high incidence of bullying in schools, I am requesting books that will empower students to realize their collective role in helping to combat this destructive behavior.
