October's Spooky Creatures

My project needs 7 clear aquarium/terrariums, live spiders, a spider/insects field guide, an insect and spider game, 5 non-fiction books on bats, spiders, and wildlife habitat, and 2 big books to share as a class.

Mrs. Burkhart Summit Elementary School
Bloomington, IN Grades PreK-2

Many children see bats and spiders as intimidating creatures. I want them to know about all the benefits they provide in addition to learning about them as creatures. This proposal is for my second grade students at a low-income school to experience bats and spiders in action. The clear view aquariums/terrariums and spiders will be a live learning station. Each student group will have one on their desk group to observe over the period of a week. They will make observations about the habits of the spider in their science journals. Since we will have discussed and researched spiders before this stage, we will have set each station with all the materials the spiders will need for a happy and healthy environment to spin webs. During observation week for spiders, we will learn about bats. How are they different than spiders? How are they alike? We will discuss the benefits bats have on the environment, just as with spiders, and where and what type of bats can be found in our surrounding area. We will wrap up the month of October by releasing our spiders into the woods next to our school and looking for the perfect location on our school grounds for a future bat house. This unit will be a wonderful hands-on unit that teaches appreciation for creatures we might not appreciate as much as we should.
