The students in my classes indicated a strong interest in oceans on an interest inventory. They need 13 materials to better pursue their study, such as books, an aquarium, videos, coloring books and a Coriolis Effect Kit.
I teach in a small town about 20 miles outside of our state's capital. My classroom serves intellectually gifted students in grades 2 and 3. The students in my program are highly intelligent and motivated.
I gave students an interest inventory at the beginning of the school year and found that my students are very interested in learning more about the ocean and the animals that call it home. Unfortunately, we do not have enough resources for the students to become fully immersed in such a study.
My classroom is unlike a "regular" classroom. I teach small classes of 8-10 students at a time and the classwork includes discovery learning. The students choose their interests. As a class, we work on research skills, creativity, thinking skills, and personal development. Because the students want to study the ocean, they will take full ownership of the learning process.
In order to pursue this topic, students will need resources for research (topic books), items for experimentation, a small aquarium for observation, and other related materials. The students crave hands-on resources and full color books.
In completing this study, students will learn how to think for themselves and how to ask the truly important questions. They will also learn how to interact with the world around them and how to better preserve the environment.
Your support will ensure that tomorrow's leaders develop important skills that will take us all into the future. You will help promote a love of learning by supporting a student-selected unit of study. You will allow students to fully immerse themselves in a complete unit of study.
