Ocean Garbage/Bugs for Dinner-Read About It! Talk About It! Write!
My students need Think, Talk, Write Nonfiction Reading Centers to help them with the ultimate goal of comprehension by prompting them to think, discuss and write about what they are reading!
My students are eager to read as they strive to reach their goals in my small group setting for academic intervention. My struggling readers and writers face a number of challenges, and year after year I work diligently to assess students reading, determine areas of need to focus on, set goals, create interventions and monitor progress. The best lesson that I have learned is that my efforts do not matter unless I can engage, inspire and "hook" my students which is why I have turned to DonorsChoose.org for help!
My Project
Think, Talk, Write Nonfiction Reading Centers include informational books and materials for students to record and share their thinking with others. Each of the two sets contains six books with engaging photographs. There are six copies of each book that will be used in small reading groups during our regular school year, as well as in our summer program for struggling third and fourth grade students. As students read in small groups, I will use the teacher guide and included graphic organizer to have students record their thoughts, key elements of the text and answers to discussion prompts. All twelve book titles are leveled which will help me match my readers with perfect texts that they can read fluently so that we may focus on comprehension monitoring through thinking, discussing and writing about interesting topics such as sloths! Additional non-fiction books such as “Bugs on the Menu!” and “Tracking Trash Flotsam, Jetsam and the Science of Ocean Motion” connect to our curriculum and can be used with the Think, Write, Talk Nonfiction Center kits. Our students know about living coral and how many legs insects have. They also need to know about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. And they need to ponder our future food supplies (that’s right-insects!). They need to know how to tackle informational books, gain information from the text, discuss the big ideas in a meaningful way and respond in writing about topics that will be important to them in the future.
