My students need games, like Spot It, Perfection, Jenga, and Monkeying Around, to increase visual perceptual skills and fine motor skills. The headphones are for a student with Autism who cannot tolerate things in his ears.
As an occupational therapist, I strive to increase each student's independence in school-related requirements. My goal is to teach skills and provide strategies which allow them to participate to the best of their abilities throughout the school day.
My students vary greatly in age, from Pre-K through 8th grade.
They are all funny, exciting, energetic people who require some additional assistance to make it through their school day. Some have visual perceptual deficits which can affect handwriting and reading, some have moderate to severe intellectual delays which affect their ability to complete everyday tasks. But regardless of their abilities or disabilities, they each have something new to teach me every day.
My Project
My students need games, like Spot It, Perfection, Jenga, and Monkeying Around, to increase visual perceptual skills and fine motor skills. The headphones are for a student with Autism who cannot tolerate things in his ears. My students will use these materials to learn specific skills which they will take back to their classrooms and be able to implement on a daily basis. Visual perceptual and fine motor delays are treated with exposure, practice, and strengthening on a daily basis. Games played in therapy can also increase social skills, peer interaction, and self-advocacy.
Donations to my project will improve my classroom by giving students a wide variety of opportunities to practice skills required for their school day.
Students will gain new strategies for overcoming skill deficits. When children master skills that have previously been difficult, an overwhelming sense of joy and accomplishment can be noted.
