I need admission to the Ocalicon Conference in Columbus, Ohio to further my skills as a parent of a child with autism and as a teacher of kindergarten students.
I have been teaching kindergarten for four years and it is one of the most rewarding grade levels to teach. Students come to kindergarten learning the alphabet, how to function at school, and learning how to be away from their families. By the end of the school year, students are reading and writing!
The change so much in such a small amount of time and it is so amazing to be a part of that process!
I hope to continue teaching kindergarten and learning how to better meet the needs of my students.
My Project
Ocalicon is a conference about autism, sensory disabilities, and low-incidence disabilities across the lifespan. The conference brings together speakers and presenters with the latest in the world of autism. There are more children being diagnosed with autism due to more parents and pediatricians becoming aware of the early signs. It is important to starting helping students early on once they are diagnosed. I typically have students in my class that do not go to preschool and kindergarten is their first experience in school. My role is to notice signs and proceed with proper interventions. It is important that I know the best ways to provide those interventions with students with disabilities so that they can grow in kindergarten academically, socially and emotionally.
My son was diagnosed with autism in November and I want to learn more to become a better parent and teacher.
Teachers need to learn how to help teach students that have disabilities but not all teachers have training in special education. I will be able to bring back what I have learned from the conference to help guide my grade level team and other members in my district. I am currently working on a Masters of Special Education: Autism Spectrum Disorder to enhance my teaching and parenting.
