Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Computers in the classroom, COOoool!". That is the reaction I get from my students when they step into the science lab and see how much technology is incorporated with science. Not only are they performing experiments, but they are also participating in interactive lessons and assessments.
My students honestly come from one of the roughest neighborhoods in our city, but in spite having all kinds of odds against them they are excited to learn.
Even though our school has a high poverty rate we have been an Exemplary school for four years in a row and became a National Blue Ribbon school in 2009. High expectations are set for teachers and students and no excuses are allowed. As a teacher I strive to give my students the best education by utilizing all the resources that are available out there.
My Project
In the classroom the laptop will be used in conjunction with the smartboard. This allows the information to be displayed on a large board in front of the classroom. It is also an interactive tool that is utilized. With the laptop we used the SmartNotebook software, in which lessons are created and made interactive with the use of games, multimedia, and activities. We also have a document camera in which the science journal and lab supplemental sheets from the Foss kits can be shown simultaneously with the lesson and experiment that is being conducted. We also use photo story 3 as an introductory piece and then as student products using pictures from their lab for a summative assessment for the 4th and 5th graders at the end of a unit.
This projects means so much to me, because I know how much it will mean to my students.
They were so disappointed when they found out a lot of resources and projects are now limited in the classroom due to the laptop being taken. The school is on a strict budget and the laptops that were ordered were already promised to a set amount of teachers. With the integration of technology in the classroom it has opened up new opportunities for the kids, many who experience technology only in school.
