Observatory and Planetarium Field Trip -- Astronomy Alive

The cost of two buses to transport 125 students and 12 chaperones to the Chabot Space and Science Center is $1312, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

I love the Chabot Space and Science Center. It is by far my favorite museum in the Bay Area. Hands-on exhibits engage. The Planetarium and MegaDome Theater awe. Touring actual observatories amazes. I had the opportunity to take a group of fifteen students there last year through the generosity of a couple parents. I would really like to take all of my classes there this school year, but the cost of the buses is prohibitive in a school where over half of the students qualify for free or reduced price lunches. If we go to Chabot, we will view a Planetarium show on black holes, explore the space science related exhibits, watch a MegaDome movie about the sun, and tour the observatories. Astronomy captures my students' interest more than any other area of my curriculum. I don't get questions for 45 minutes straight teaching any other science subject. I teach 8th grade physical science at a school in the part of the suburbs that I have heard referred to as the "not-so-nice part of town." More than half of the students come from families that speak another language at home. My teaching team currently serves about 130 students. This grant will pay for the cost of transportation to Chabot. Students will then only be responsible for paying for entrance to the museum. I want students to be excited about science. Too many at this age begin to check out of school, and I hope to keep that from happening. My students from last year who were able to go on this trip have come back and told me how much they enjoyed the trip?it's the only thing they mention from last year!
