"O brave new world, That has such people in't." - Shakespeare, The Tempest
This passage from William Shakespeare serves as the inspiration for the title of Aldous Huxley's novel, Brave New World. For my AP English Literature students, they too are entering a "brave new world" of literary analysis.
Although they are bright and eager to learn, many of the students in my AP class struggle with the course's difficult concepts and writing demands.
For most of the students, many of whom come from low-income families, this is the first time they are being challenged in high school.
My Project
For this proposal, I am requesting 30 copies of Huxley's novel, Brave New World, to read with my students. During our six week unit, we will read and analyze the dystopian novel, making comparisons to today's society. The novel has many key passages that will allow for deep literary analysis and will also make for lively class discussions. Students will be drawn into the futuristic ideas presented in the novel. By providing students with their own copy of the book, they will be able to mark these passages and track ideas and motifs, a skill that will help them greatly in college.
Studying the novel will also help students better prepare for the AP exam in May. Students who score a 3 or higher can earn college credit.
With your help, my students' introduction to dystopian literature can help them better understand their own lives while fostering a love for language and literature.
Brave New World is an important text, with many connections to today's society, that I am excited to share with my students.
