Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My urban general biology students are diverse, and eager to learn! In the heart of the midwest, our high school has a reputation as a “tough” school but my students are resilient, practical and resourceful and I love them all! The ethnic makeup of our school is: white (53%), African American (21%), Hispanic (13%) and (51%) of students are receiving a free or discounted-price lunch.
Our diverse students are tomorrow’s lab techs, scientists, artists, athletes, inventors, and workers and they are hungry for the opportunities that will help open their minds to grow.
My science classrooms are mixed-level meaning students have a variety of abilities and interests and they are looking forward to a wide array of scenarios after school from trade school, college and direct employment.
Students with special needs are served in the classroom and often lead by example with their strong work ethic while our deep thinkers go further into a project and extend their learning. My Next Generation Science Standard inspired classroom utilizes projects, models, and experiments but our district is underfunded meaning I need to purchase many items myself.
My Project
After an anonymous in class student survey revealed 30% of students came to class so hungry they could not think straight, I started bringing peanut butter and graham crackers to class. Students were so appreciative and productivity has gone up! Currently my high schoolers are passing General Biology class with Cs or better 82% of the time. The demand for nutritious snacks has gone beyond what my personal budget can handle so I'm asking for your help.
Students will actively learn about nutrition starting with the healthy snacks you will provide.
During our nutrition unit they will compare junk food labels with healthier options like granola bars and protein bars and discover which has the macromolecules needed for healthy growth and development. My hope is they learn to make better lifelong decisions on what to eat so they can become strong, active and health conscious adults.
In addition, these treats will be used to reward performing students. I have seen how a simple reward can make the difference from failing to passing for some of my harder to reach students.
