My Students

I am a teacher in an all inclusive special education school. My class is a very involved autistic population with emotional and physical delays. The challenges these children face are many. Preforming simple every day tasks can be overwhelming and frightening.

My class of six pre-teen boys are having a wonderful time with our garden.

My students have dealt with busing and outside environmental phobias to work on this project. They have recycled bottles and cans to raise money, cleaned up the area, tilled the soil and placed fruit and vegetables, some grown from seeds, into their garden. Watching their socialization skills and start of their camaraderie is inspiring to us all.

My Project

Through our garden we have learned why fresh fruits and vegetables are so important in our diets. We are preparing to start a school store and sell our produce to all. Harvest time is our favorite time of the year! We now can pick, wash, and cook all our nutritious fruits and vegetables.

Now that we raised money to buy seeds and small plants, we need refrigeration to help preserve our finished product.

With a refrigerator, the class can start cooking and preparing meals, learning monetary values and furthering their socialization skills. The class needs to proceed and continue with this multi-learning experience.
