I teach eighth-grade math to special education and general education students. It is important to me to make math fun and not "intimidating" to my students. I want to make sure my students have access to the basic supplies they need to be successful in school.
I teach at a Title I school in New York where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many students have minimal access to basic school supplies, and when they need replacing are unable to replenish what they need. I want to be able to supply them with these necessities.
My Project
Many students take the bus to school and get in too late to take advantage of the breakfast program. Others work through their lunch periods and miss lunch altogether.
This inspired several students to help me write this DonorsChoose.org Project.
These students suggested keeping healthy, nutrition dense snacks in the classroom for exactly these situations. They took the initiative to help create their own "kid inspired" project for healthy nutrition choices in the classroom. Sitting down to eat at home sometimes isn't an option, so having these nutritious snacks at school will help us to be more healthy.
Having essential healthy nutrition dense snacks available for my students will help them to be more successful in the classroom.
When students are hungry and are feeling weak, it shows in their demeanor. They are unable to complete their basic math tasks. Having nutrient dense snacks, low-calorie chips, and cookies for hungry children to consume in school will allow me to keep them full, focused and healthy!
